Tuesday Was a Day in Baseball That We've Never Had Before
You know the old saying, "You never know what you'll see when you go to the ballpark?"
Well, that was on full display on Tuesday night around baseball as we saw a day in baseball history unlike any other.
Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:
Happenings in MLB today:
- a team scoring 20+ runs with 7+ HR in a game (Cubs)
- a pitcher allowing 13+ ER (Ben Lively)
- a no-hitter (Framber Valdez)
- a walkoff balk (Josh Walker)
Never in MLB history had all 4 of those occurred in the same season, let alone on the same day.
It was a truly unique way to start the month of August and it points to a very exciting stretch run for the MLB season.
After the Cubs performance they are just 4.0 games back in the National League Central, while after the no-hitter, the Astros are just 0.5 games back in the American League West.
Unfortunately, the Josh Walker balk-off was the latest in a comedy of errors for the New York Mets. One of the most disappointing teams in all of baseball, they are 50-56 and in fourth place in the National League East. After trading away Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Tommy Pham, Eduardo Escobar and Mark Canha, they are looking at an organizational re-tooling that could take multiple years to come to fruition.
Of course, with Steve Cohen's wallet, they could go out and buy multiple free agents this offseason and be right back in it, but we'll have to wait and see.
