Where Miami Marlins' Luis Arraez Ranks in Baseball History With .400 Average Through 64 Games
Miami Marlins star Luis Arraez went 1-4 on Friday night in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
With the one-hit effort, he's now hitting an even .400 on the year. He's attempting to become the first player to hit .400 in a season since Ted Williams did it in 1941 (.406).
How does he rank in history through his first 64 games? Sarah Langs of MLB.com has the answer in a series of tweets:
Luis Arraez’s .400 BA is the 10th-highest by a qualified hitter in his team’s 1st 64 games, since 1941 (based on current qualification rules)
the list
1993 Andrés Galarraga: .433
2008 Chipper Jones: .420
1941 Ted Williams: .411
1997 Larry Walker: .410
1983 Rod Carew: .409
1948 Ted Williams: .403
1997 Tony Gwynn: .402
1999 Tony Fernández: .401
1948 Stan Musial: .401
2023 Luis Arraez: .400
That's a list full of several Hall of Famers, so for Arraez to be keeping their company is incredibly impressive.
Not only is it impressive what he's done statistically, it's also impressive what he's done for the Marlins. Miami is out to a 35-29 start this season and is currently in second place in the National League East. They trail the Atlanta Braves by 4.5 games and right now hold a wild card spot in the National League.
Arraez was acquired from the Minnesota Twins this offseason in a deal for pitcher Pablo Lopez. He won a batting title last year for Minnesota.
The Marlins and White Sox will play on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. ET.
