Where Miami Marlins' Luis Arraez Ranks in Batting Average History After Friday's Game
The Pittsburgh Pirates snapped their 10-game losing streak on Friday night with a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins, but even in defeat Marlins catalyst Luis Arraez accomplishes great things with the bat.
The tablesetter went 3-4 on the day with a run scored and is now hitting .402 on the season.
Arraez is attempting to become the first player to hit .400 over a full season since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941.
For a look at history, here's Sarah Langs of MLB.com on Twitter:
Luis Arraez’s .402 BA is the 5th-highest by a qualified hitter in his team’s 1st 77 games, since 1941 (based on current qualification rules)
the list
1997 Larry Walker: .409
1977 Rod Carew: .407
1993 John Olerud: .406
1993 Andrés Galarraga: .403
2023 Luis Arraez: .402
1983 Rod Carew: .402
1999 Tony Fernández: .401
To have the fifth-highest batting average through 77 games in the last 80 years is quite impressive. Arraez is well on his way to his second consecutive batting title after winning one with the Minnesota Twins in 2022. He's also well on his way to being the leadoff hitter for the National League in the All-Star Game next month in Seattle.
He was acquired in the offseason from the Twins in a deal for pitcher Pablo Lopez.
With the loss, the Marlins are now 43-34 and are currently 6.5 games back of the Braves in the National League East.
They are currently tied for the top spot in the National League Wild Card race.
