The Kansas City Royals are holding their breath on Sunday with regards to veteran catcher Salvador Perez, who left the game early with injury.

The latest comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Perez was removed from Sunday's game against Rays in the second inning with left hamstring discomfort, Joel Goldberg of Bally Sports Kansas City reports.

ANALYSIS
Perez went from first to home on an MJ Melendez double in the first inning, and it would seem he injured himself in the process. The veteran backstop will undergo testing to determine the full extent of the injury. Perez has been with Kansas City his entire career and remains under contract for two more years. Royals GM J.J. Picollo told Anne Rogers of MLB.com last month that he had "no intention" of trading Perez at this year's deadline.

While an injury to Perez might not cost the Royals anything in terms of this lost season, you don't like to see good players - or good guys - get hurt, and Perez qualifies as both.

The 33-year-old is an eight-time All-Star, a five-time Gold Glover and a four-time Silver Slugger. He also was the World Series MVP in 2015 when they Royals won the World Series over the New York Mets.

He's hitting .255 this season with 15 homers and 40 RBI. Lifetime, he's got 238 bombs and 772 RBI. He's a career .267 hitter who led the league in homers with 48 back in 2021.

At the time of this posting, the Royals lead the Rays, 8-4, in the eighth inning. If the Royals win, they'll be 40 games under .500 at 27-67.
