Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo has undergone surgery to repair the torn meniscus in his right knee, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Monday.

The procedure was successful, and Lovullo said Perdomo hopes to be back in the lineup in May.

Perdomo started the first seven games of the Diamondbacks' season at shortstop. He was batting .250 with a double, two RBI, a .625 OPS and a 0.1 WAR before he went down with his injury on April 3.

Arizona placed the 24-year-old infielder on the 10-day injured list on Sunday.

Perdomo was a top 100 prospect in baseball before he made his MLB debut in 2021. He became the D-Backs' full-time starter at shortstop in 2022, managing to post a 0.6 WAR in 148 games despite hitting below the Mendoza Line.

The young infielder broke out in 2023, though, batting .246 with a .712 OPS and 2.3 WAR in 144 games. Thanks to his .296 batting average and .851 OPS through June 28, Perdomo made his first career All-Star team.

Perdomo's production may have fallen off in the second half, but his bat came back to life in the playoffs. He hit .275 with a .754 OPS across 17 postseason appearances, helping the Diamondbacks win their first NL pennant in over 20 years.

In Perdomo's absence, shortstop Kevin Newman has been called up from Triple-A Reno. He was batting .364 with a 1.044 OPS in six minor league appearances this season.

Since joining Arizona's big league roster, Newman is 1-for-6 with an RBI.

24-year-old rookie Blaze Alexander will also get reps at shortstop while Perdomo is out. He is batting .292 with a .763 OPS through eight appearances, also getting time at second and designated hitter.
