Arizona Diamondbacks' Evan Longoria Ruled Day-to-Day After Exiting Game 2 With Injury
Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Evan Longoria has been ruled day-to-day following negative X-rays, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Monday night.
Longoria was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. The veteran was removed from the game with a hand injury, as Jordan Lawlar came in to pinch run for him.
Emmanuel Rivera went out to play third base in Longoria's place.
The Diamondbacks escaped Game 2 with a 4-2 win, going up 2-0 in the best-of-five series before even playing a game at home. Arizona was also on the road for the NL Wild Card Series, sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0.
Longoria had started all four games of the Diamondbacks' postseason run prior to leaving with his hand injury.
The 38-year-old has not made it past the Division Series since leading the Tampa Bay Rays to the World Series as a rookie in 2008. Prior to Arizona's win over Milwaukee, Longoria had been a part of five series losses in a row dating back to that Fall Classic.
Injuries already hampered Longoria this season – his first with the Diamondbacks after 10 with the Rays and five with the San Francisco Giants. In 74 games, Longoria hit .223 with 11 home runs, 28 RBI, a .717 OPS and a 0.5 WAR – the lowest of his career.
Longoria, a three-time All-Star, is a .264 career hitter with an .804 OPS. In the postseason, the Hall of Fame hopeful is batting .184 with a .672 OPS across 39 career appearances.
After going 1-for-8 in the NL Wild Card Series, Longoria is 2-for-7 with a sacrifice fly and two RBI so far in the NLDS.
It remains to be seen if Longoria will be penciled back into the Diamondbacks' lineup for Game 3, which is slated to start at 9:07 p.m. ET on Wednesday. If Longoria is unable to go, either Rivera or Jace Peterson would likely slot in at third.
