The Boston Red Sox, coming off a road trip in which they just lost four of six games, won't be activating star shortstop Trevor Story from the injured list on Friday, which was an original possibility.

Story has been out all season recovering from an offseason elbow procedure and apparently isn't ready to return yet.

The following update is from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Story (elbow) won't be activated off the 60-day injured list Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

ANALYSIS
Story expressed a desire to remain with Triple-A Worcester and continue rehabbing, so he'll take another couple of days to gear up for his season debut. The 30-year-old infielder is currently slashing .250/.400/.688 through six games in Triple-A during his assignment.

At the time of this posting, the Red Sox are 1.5 games back in the wild card race so Story's eventual return looms large. He figures to play shortstop and add offensive thump to a position that has been devoid of it all year. The Red Sox have used light-hitting Enrique Hernandez, Pablo Reyes, Yu Chang and David Hamilton at the position this year.

When he does make his season debut, it will be his second year with the Sox after signing a six-year deal before the 2022 season.

He hit .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs last year for the Red Sox. He played in just 94 games a season ago with unrelated injuries.

The 30-year-old is a two-time All-Star who has received MVP votes in three different seasons. He's a lifetime .268 hitter with 174 home runs. He had played with the Colorado Rockies prior.

The Red Sox will play the Blue Jays on Friday night.
