Boston Red Sox infielder Trevor Story has been out all season after undergoing internal brace surgery this past offseason.

The initial fear was that Story could miss the entire season with the injury, but momentum has grown over the last few weeks about Story coming back for a large portion of this season.

Talk has also grown about Story possibly coming back as a designated hitter before he's officially ready to throw and play defense, similar to what the Phillies have done with Bryce Harper.

Story spoke with the media on Monday at Fenway Park about his rehab and recovery. The full six-plus minute interview is embedded below but we have some partial transcripts as well:

On throwing from 150 feet right now and how he builds up arm strength:

"I'll spend mostly two weeks at a distance so we can build up the strength there, the conditioning of my arm and I feel like that's what it's really about now. I feel like it's coming out good, my arm feels great, just a matter of getting the arm back in shape."

On if he has a target date for return in mind:

"Not necessarily. I think the progression is kind of a moving thing based on how I feel but I feel good about coming back to play shortstop sometime in August. I know that's what I want to do, that's my goal, that's kind of where I've got my head at."

On possibly playing DH before he can play defense:

"It's still on the table. It's still definitely a possible. I'm getting ready for that, that's something that I really want to do..."

When he does return to the field, it will be his second season with the Red Sox. He hit .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs last year. He played in just 94 games a season ago with unrelated injuries.

The 30-year-old is a two-time All-Star who has received MVP votes in three different seasons. He's a lifetime .268 hitter with 174 home runs. He had played with the Colorado Rockies before signing in Boston.

The Red Sox open up a series with the Rockies on Monday at 7:10 p.m. ET.
