After experiencing an injury setback, the Chicago Cubs won't be activating All-Star pitcher Marcus Stroman from the injured list on Wednesday as originally hoped.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Stroman (hip) is experiencing right rib discomfort and will not be activated from the injured list Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

ANALYSIS
Stroman had been slated to return to the Cubs' rotation Wednesday night against the White Sox, but his absence will stretch on at least a little while longer. The 32-year-old is being evaluated Tuesday by Chicago's medical staff to determine the severity of this rib-related setback. He originally landed on the injured list Aug. 2 due to right hip inflammation.

Stroman's return will be a big deal for Chicago whenever it happens, but they certainly want him back as soon as possible. The Cubs enter play on Tuesday at 61-57 and 3.5 games back in the National League Central race. They are just 1.0 game back of the third and final card spot and Stroman pairs with lefty Justin Steele as one of the best 1-2 punches in baseball when both are healthy.

Stroman is 10-8 this season with a 3.85 ERA but his numbers are heavily inflated by his starts prior to being placed on the injured list. He had given up 22 earned runs in his last five starts before going on the injured list.

The Cubs will take on the White Sox on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. ET.
