The Chicago Cubs lost a key contributor on Friday as starting second baseman Nick Hoerner was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

The team put out the following information in a Tweet:

'The #Cubs today made the following roster moves:

-INF Nico Hoerner placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to May 9) with a left hamstring strain

-Recalled INF Miles Mastrobuoni from @IowaCubs

-Activated LHP Brandon Hughes from the 15-day IL

-Optioned RHP Javier Assad to Iowa'

The Hoerner loss is the biggest piece of news for the Cubbies, as he's been a catalyst for the team this year. He's hitting .303 with through 152 at-bats with two home runs, 19 RBI and 12 stolen bases. He's posted a .743 OPS as well.

He made his debut in 2019 but didn't assume a full-time role until 2022, when he hit .281. This year appears to be an extension of that breakout, so hopefully he is back soon.

The Cubs are currently 18-19 and in third place in the National League Central. They enter play on Friday 2.5 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates, who have lost nine of their last 10.

Mastrobuoni, 27, has been up already this year. He's hitting .200 in 20 at-bats, posting one RBI and one stolen base. For his career, he's a .194 hitter but has just 36 career at-bats.

He made his major league debut last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, appearing in eight total games.

The Cubs take on the Twins tonight at 8:10 p.m. ET in Minnesota.
