Chicago White Sox' Liam Hendriks Takes Another Step in Return From Elbow Injury
Chicago White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks is set for another positive step as he battles back from an elbow injury that has sidelined him for nearly a month.
The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:
Hendricks (elbow) will throw a bullpen session this weekend, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Hendriks began playing catch a little less than a week ago and now is nearly ready to test things out from the bump. He's been sidelined since early June with right elbow inflammation. It's not clear whether Hendriks will require a rehab assignment before rejoining the White Sox' bullpen, although it seems likely.
The White Sox, although an underwhelming 37-49 this season, are still in the American League Central playoff race, so getting Hendriks back will be a big deal for them. They enter play on Tuesday at 6.5 games back.
He is one of the top closers in the league, having wrapped up 116 career saves, nearly all of which have come since 2019. He led the league in 2021 in saves with 38 for the White Sox.
Hendriks is in his 13th career major league season and has spent time with the Twins, Royals, Blue Jays, Athletics and White Sox. He's a three-time All-Star (2019, 2021-2022).
In five appearances this year, he is 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA. He's only worked five innings and has struck out three.
Hendriks also recently learned that he'll be the recipient of the Jimmy V Award at the upcoming ESPYs.
Those are July 12.
