Cincinnati Reds Activate Joey Votto Ahead of Series with Colorado Rockies
The Cincinnati Reds are activating longtime first baseman Joey Votto ahead of Monday's series opening game with the Colorado Rockies.
Votto played just 91 games in 2022 and then missed the rest of the season with multiple arm injuries, and then spent the first part of this season recovering. He underwent surgeries on his left shoulder and biceps.
He announced his return at a press conference on Monday.
Votto is joining the Reds at a great time, as the team has won eight straight games and has moved to just 0.5 games out of first place in the National League Central.
Votto will be starting his 17th major league season. One of the most accomplished players of his generation, he's a career .297 hitter with 342 homers and 1,106 RBI. An on-base machine, he has a career .412 on-base percentage.
He's a six-time All-Star selection, a Gold Glove winner, and he won the MVP in 2010. He's led the league in OBP in seven different seasons and is a possible selection in the future for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
He was struggling on his rehab assignment at Triple-A, hitting just .176 with three home runs and 10 RBI in his 74 plate appearances.
The Reds and Rockies will kick off the series on Monday at 7:10 p.m. ET. Brandon Williamson pitches against Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber.
The lineups are not out yet but it will be interesting to see where Votto hits in the order, considering the Reds have been so hot in his absence.
