Cincinnati Reds Give Good Injury Update on Young Infielder
The Cincinnati Reds say that young infielder Noelvi Marte will be ready to go for spring training, despite suffering a hamstring injury that forced him to stop playing winter ball.
Per Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Inquirer:
Nick Krall said the hamstring injury that Noelvi Marte suffered in late November is a 6-to-10 week process. He’s on good track for the spring.
That's certainly good news for the Reds, who will be a trendy pick to do damage this season in the National League. After finishing 82-80 last season, Cincinnati appears better after adding Frankie Montas, Emilio Pagan, Nick Martinez and Jeimer Candelario in free agency. Furthermore, they should see major steps forward from young players like Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Elly De La Cruz, Marte and others.
Marte made his major league debut this past year and played in 35 games for the Reds. He hit .316 with three homers, 15 RBI and six stolen bases.
Because he hasn't played enough games yet to graduate out of it, he is still the organization's No. 1 overall prospect.
Per his prospect profile from MLB.com:
There are few prospects with more raw power than Marte, and he’s continuing to learn how to tap into it, with 36 homers over the last two seasons. It shows up more to his pull side as he’s good at barreling the ball out front. He draws walks and keeps his strikeouts to a minimum but can still improve on swing decisions and overall consistency in following his gameplan, though it should be noted he’s always been quite young for his level.
The Reds finished 82-80 and were third in the National League Central.
