Cincinnati Reds Place Key Lineup Piece on Injured List as Stretch Run Nears
The Cincinnati Reds enter play on Thursday at 67-61 and tied for the second wild card spot in the National League.
As they chase their first playoff berth since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, they'll have to play without first baseman Joey Votto, who was placed on the injured list.
The Reds announced that they placed Votto on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder discomfort and recalled Nick Senzel.
Votto has only played 51 games this season after he spent the early portion of the season recovering from an injury suffered last year. He's hitting just .200 this year but has registered a .303 on-base percentage with 13 homers and 33 RBI.
In his 17th year in the big leagues, he's one of the most accomplished players of his generation. A six-time All-Star and a former MVP, he's a lifetime .295 hitter who has racked up 2,127 career hits.
He has a career .410 on-base percentage and has led the league in that category seven different times.
The 28-year-old Senzel is hitting .219 this season with nine home runs and 37 RBI. He's in his fifth year in the big leagues, all with the Reds.
Cincinnati will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night. First pitch from Chase Field is set for 9:40 p.m. ET as Brandon Williamson (CIN) pitches against Merrill Kelly (ARI).
Williamson is 4-3 with a 4.47 ERA while Kelly is 10-5 with a 3.13 ERA.
The Diamondbacks are chasing the Reds in the wild card race. They've won eight of their last 10 and are 0.5 games out of the third wild card spot.
