The Cleveland Guardians are holding their breath on young right-hander Triston McKenze after he was scratched from his start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.

In addition to being scratched, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that he also underwent an MRI.

Triston McKenzie is getting an MRI tonight in Phoenix on his sore right elbow. The Guardians will then make a decision on whether he returns to the IL. He opened the year on the IL and made just two starts before his elbow started barking.

It certainly has been a frustrating year for McKenzie on the injury front. After winning the American League Central last year, the Guardians were counting on him and Shane Bieber to lead the pitching staff again this year.

McKenzie pitched well in those two starts this year, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He struck out 15 batters in just 10.0 innings.

The 25-year-old threw 191.1 innings a season ago for Cleveland, going 11-11 with a 2.96 ERA. He's 18-22 for his career with a 3.70 ERA.

The Guardians started Touki Toussaint in his place on Friday night and lost, 5-1.

They are now 32-37 on the season but because the American League Central is so mediocre, they are just 2.5 games out of first place, behind the Minnesota Twins.

The Guardians will play the Diamondbacks again on Saturday at 10:10 p.m. ET as Bieber pitches against Tommy Henry.

Bieber is 5-3 with a 3.29 ERA while Henry is 3-1 with a 4.86.
