Detroit Tigers Breakthrough Youngster Hits Another Checkpoint in Return From Leg Injury
The Detroit Tigers got good injury news on multiple fronts on Saturday. The team received a good report on pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez after his live batting practice session and also got a good update on young star Riley Greene, who took batting practice on the field.
The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:
Greene (fibula) took batting practice and did some straight-line sprints at full speed Saturday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
There's still no official timetable in place for Greene's return, but it's possible he embarks on a rehab assignment relatively soon based on the progress he's shown. The 22-year-old outfielder was slashing .296/.362/.443 with 18 RBI through 224 plate appearances before landing on the injured list May 31.
That is definitely a good thing as Greene is a huge part of the organization's present and its future. He and Spencer Torkelson make up the position player nucleus of that future.
In addition to the .296 average, the 22-year-old and former No. 5 overall pick in the draft has five home runs and six stolen bases.
He made his major league debut in 2022 and is a lifetime .268 hitter with 10 home runs.
At the time of this posting, the Tigers lead the Minnesota Twins, 3-0, in the bottom of the fourth inning. Detroit entered play at 32-42 and 5.5 games back of the Twins in the American League Central.
The two teams finish out the series on Sunday at 12:10 p.m. ET.
