First-Place Minnesota Twins Place Star on Injured List
The Minnesota Twins, in first place in the American League Central, have placed star Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list with a rib issue.
The following comes from the RotoWire fantasy baseball portal:
The Twins placed Buxton on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left rib contusion retroactive to Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Buxton hasn't played since taking a pitch to the ribs Thursday, and the Twins have now decided to shelf Buxton for at least another week. His move to the injured list opens a spot for Trevor Larnach (illness) to return from the 10-day IL.
While this injury is out of Buxton's control, it's a frustrating setback for a player that has had several of them in his career.
He played just 28 games in 2018, 87 in 2019, 39 in the COVID 2020 season, 61 in 2021 and 92 in 2022. He's only played more than 100 games once in his career (2017 - 140).
He was named an All-Star in 2022 and has won a Gold Glove. The team has moved him to designated hitter this year with an effort to keep him healthier.
In 50 games this season, he's hitting .220 with a .325 on-base percentage. He's registered 10 homers, 23 RBI and six stolen bases.
He signed a seven-year, $100 million contract before the 2022 season that will keep in Minnesota through the 2028 season.
The Twins enter play on Tuesday at 31-29 overall. They'll begin a series with the MLB-best Tampa Bay Rays as Louie Varland pitches against Zach Eflin.
