Former Minnesota Twins Star Leaves Organization to Take Job with Los Angeles Angels
Former Minnesota Twins' star Torii Hunter has left the organization to become a special assistant to the general manager in Anaheim, where he also played during his 19-year career.
Per MLB.com:
“It means a lot,” Hunter said. “This is a team that when I was in Minnesota and was a free agent, they adopted me and brought me in and treated me like a king here. So I’ve definitely got love for the fans and for the organization. And my son [Torii Jr.] played here for seven years in the organization. So to come back and give this wisdom, all the strikeouts that I made an adjustment on, I want to give the wisdom back to these guys.”
Hunter had been a special assistant with the Twins since 2016, but he's obviously had a pull with the Angels too - he interviewed for their managerial vacancy this offseason before it went to Ron Washington as well.
Hunter spent 19 years in the big leagues with the Twins, Angels and Tigers. He spent 12 years in all with Minnesota and five in Anaheim, earning a total of five All-Star berths and winning nine Gold Glove Awards. He was also a two-time Silver Slugger winner who hit .277 in his career with 353 home runs.
He hit 25 home runs or more in five separate seasons and he eclipsed the 100-RBI mark twice.
Hunter isn't the only former Twins player working in Anaheim:
Hunter joins Kurt Suzuki, Eddie Guardado and Chris Carpenter as special assistants to Minasian. Hunter was teammates with Guardado on the Twins from 1997-2003, as well as with Suzuki on the ’15 Twins.
