In a surprising development, New York Yankees pitcher Frankie Montas is making his season debut on Sunday, starting for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Greg Joyce of the New York Post had the information Saturday night on social media:

Aaron Boone said Frankie Montas will throw an inning tomorrow for SWB.

Montas has been out the entire season with a shoulder injury and was thought to be done for the season, so this certainly is a surprise.

Montas is unlikely to appear in a game for the Yankees this season, so this could represent a confidence builder heading into the 2024 season. Also, Montas is a free agent this winter, so this could be a way for him to showcase his health for interested teams - including the Yankees.

The 30-year-old Montas was acquired from the Oakland Athletics at the trade deadline in 2022 and went just 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA for New York.

If he doesn't pitch for the Yankees this year, he'll become a free agent at the end of the season having thrown just 39.2 innings in New York.

He finished sixth in Cy Young voting in 2021 with the A's and is a lifetime 36-35 with a 3.90 ERA.

The Yankees enter play on Sunday at 76-73 and in fourth place in the American League East. They've won six of their last 10 and are 2.0 games ahead of the Red Sox in avoiding the cellar.

They will play the Pirates again on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. ET.
