The Los Angeles Dodgers got more positive news Monday on the status of injured ace Walker Buehler.

Buehler, who has missed the entire season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, is set to take the next step in his recovery and could end up being an option for Los Angeles as they push towards the playoffs.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Buehler (elbow) "will take the next step in his recovery by facing hitters in Arizona this week," Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

ANALYSIS
It was reported last week that Buehler was close to beginning a rehab assignment, and while it's unclear if he will officially start one in the coming days, he appears ready to take another step in his recovery. Expect the Dodgers to release another update on his status following his upcoming session.

Facing hitters is a big step, so this is great news. The Dodgers had hoped to Buehler back by September all along, so maybe they can do that. He'd be a big boon if healthy in either a starting or a bullpen role.

When healthy, he's one of the best pitchers in baseball. He helped the Dodgers win the World Series in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and owns a lifetime 46-16 record and a 3.02 ERA.

Buehler is a two-time All-Star (2019 and 2021) who led the league in win-loss percentage in 2019 at the age of 24. He has received Top-10 Cy Young votes in two separate seasons as well.

The Dodgers will play the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night at 9:40 p.m. ET.
