Los Angeles Dodgers Place J.D. Martinez on Injured List
The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed designated hitter JD Martinez on the injured list with a lower back issue. The injury is backdated so he'll be required to miss the next week.
Martinez, 35, is in his first year with the Dodgers after spending the last five with the Boston Red Sox. He won the World Series in 2018 with Boston and has also spent three years with the Astros (2011-2013), 3.5 years with the Detroit Tigers (2014-2017), and half a year with the Diamondbacks (2017).
He signed a one-year deal worth $10 million this offseason in Los Angeles.
Martinez is a five-time all-star (2015, 2018-19, 2021-2022) who led the league in RBI (130) back in 2018. He has received MVP votes in four different seasons.
Currently, he's hitting .250 for the Dodgers with four home runs and is part of a potent offense that includes Mookie Betts, Max Muncy and James Outman.
The Dodgers are currently readying for a weekend series with the St. Louis Cardinals. Friday's game begins at 10:10 p.m. ET. Dustin May will pitch for Los Angeles while Jack Flaherty goes for St. Louis.
Entering the start of that game, the Dodgers are in second place in teh National League West at 13-13. They are behind the Diamondbacks (14-12) and ahead of the Padres (13-14), Giants (11-14) and Rockies (8-18).
In the National League Central, the Cardinals are in last at 10-16. They are behind the Pirates (18-8), Brewers (16-9), Cubs (14-11), and Cincinatti Reds (10-15).
