Veteran Johnny Cueto is getting closer to rejoining the Miami Marlins rotation.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Cueto (biceps/ankle) is scheduled to make his next rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Jacksonville, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

ANALYSIS
Cueto is targeting around five innings or 75 pitches in the third start of his rehab assignment after he most recently covered 3.2 innings for Double-A Pensacola last Friday while allowing four runs on seven hits and zero walks. Assuming Cueto gets through the upcoming rehab outing unscathed, he could be cleared to return from the 60-day injured list next week to make his Marlins debut. With Edward Cabrera (shoulder) recently joining Trevor Rogers (biceps/shoulder) on the IL, the Marlins should have a spot in the rotation available for Cueto.

The report is actually slightly wrong. It won't be the debut for Cueto. He has appeared in one game this year and pitched one inning, allowing four runs.

Cueto is in his 16th year in the big leagues with the Reds, Royals, Giants, White Sox and Marlins.

He is a two-time All-Star selection who helped the Royals win the 2015 World Series.

For his career, he's 143-108 with a 3.46 ERA. He led the majors in innings pitched (243.2) in 2014 and led the league in strikeouts that same year.

He's battled injuries the last several years, having only thrown 150 or more innings once since 2017, but if he he's healthy, he could be a boon to the Marlins rotation.

Miami is 42-31 and 4.5 games back in the National League East.
