It just keeps getting worse for the New York Mets. The team was swept by the division-rival Braves this week and made some dubious team history in the process.

Now, it appears that the team is going to lose its most productive player to the injured list. According to a report from Will Sammon of the Athletic, it's likely that Pete Alonso will miss time after being hit by a pitch in the wrist area on Wednesday.

Originally, the injury outlook looked promising.

It keeps getting worse for the Mets: Seems likely that Pete Alonso will land on the injured list.

He added the following:

Pregame yesterday, Showalter said the further tests in NY were not part of the original plan. After the game, he deferred to Eppler. At this point, I was told things have trended toward IL stint.

It's a devastating loss for the disappointing Mets. New York has lost six straight and seven of its last 10. They now sit at 30-33 on the season and 8.5 games back in the National League East.

Alonso has helped carry the offense this season.

For the season, he's hitting .231 with the 22 homers and 49 RBIs. He's also posted a .872 OPS in 229 at-bats. His 22 home runs lead baseball while his 49 RBIs are fifth.

For his career, he's a .258 hitter with 168 homers and 429 RBI. Alonso was a second-round pick out of the University of Florida and won the Rookie of the Year award in the National League in 2019. He's also been an All-Star and is vying to join other National League stars in Seattle this summer. Hopefully he's healthy enough to play, if selected.
