New York Mets Reveal Injury to Pitcher Max Scherzer and Update His Status

New York Mets ace Max Scherzer is battling a neck issue but looks like he'll throw through it.

After hearing earlier in the day on Friday that New York Mets ace Max Scherzer was battling a "minor" injury, it's been revealed that Scherzer is batting neck stiffness and he's likely to pitch through it.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Scherzer is dealing with neck stiffness but is currently penciled in for Sunday's start against the Dodgers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

ANALYSIS
A report earlier in the day suggested that Scherzer's first start of the second half would come Tuesday against the White Sox, but he looks like he'll still be able to pitch this weekend, barring the issue getting worse in the next day or two. General manager Billy Eppler said Scherzer picked up the neck injury due to sleeping the wrong way, and the issue isn't believed to be related to the spasms that affected him earlier this season.

That's certainly good news for the Mets, but it's still something to keep an eye on.

As the Mets try to hang tough in the National League playoff race, they need to be at full strength.

They are 42-49 and are 8.0 games back in the National League wild card picture.

Scherzer is 8-3 this season with a 4.31 ERA. He's struck out 101 batters in 87.2 innings.

For his career, he's been one of the best pitchers of the last 20 years. He's 209-105 with a 3.15 ERA. He's an eight-time All-Star, a three-time Cy Young winner and a World Series champion (2019).

The Mets will play the Dodgers on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. ET.
