New York Yankees Provide Possible Return Date For Injured SP Luis Severino
The New York Yankees, currently in fourth place in the American League East, could be getting back a big member of their starting rotation this weekend.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com provided an update on the health of Luis Severino on Twitter on Tuesday, saying:
Luis Severino is scheduled to throw 55-60 pitches tonight for @SOMPatriots.
It’s possible that his next start could be in the Majors on Sunday at Cincinnati … which would be funny since it’s at 11:35am, and Severino didn’t want to pitch in a morning game at Scranton.
Obviously, we'll have to see how Severino's Double-A rehab start goes on Tuesday, but it's encouraging to hear that he could be back on a big league mound on Sunday.
The Yankees certainly could use him, as they've dealt with hefty injuries to the pitching staff all season. Carlos Rodon, Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino and Tommy Kahnle have all been out for the season.
Severino has been battling a lat issue that he suffered late in spring training.
For his career, Severino is 50-29 with a 3.39 ERA. He made the American League all-star team in both 2017 and 2018. He's dealt with injuries frequently in his career. He made just three starts in 2019, missed all of 2020, made four appearances in 2021 and started just 19 games in 2022.
The Yankees are continuing a series on Tuesday in Toronto against the rival Blue Jays. The series could get interesting after accusations were made by the Blue Jays broadcast team of possible cheating by Aaron Judge.
