After thinking that he would be out all season with an arm injury, the New York Yankees just may activate starting pitcher Frankie Montas from the injured list after all.

Per Max Goodman of the Newark Star-Ledger:

Frankie Montas has been upgraded from doubtful to questionable for the Yankees as they play out the final week of their regular season.

Asked on Sunday morning if there’s any shot that Montas will make his season debut before the offseason begins on October 2, Yankees manager Aaron Boone didn’t rule it out.

“It’s possible, we’ll see,” Boone said. “We’re talking through that now.”

The 30-year-old Montas was acquired from the Oakland Athletics at the trade deadline in 2022 and went just 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA for New York. He has thrown just 39.2 innings in New York since his acquisition.

He finished sixth in Cy Young voting in 2021 with the A's and is a lifetime 36-35 with a 3.90 ERA.

Montas is set to be a free agent at the end of the season so any activation and appearances will likely be showcases for him for the offseason - including for the Yankees and their major league coaching staff.

He has tossed 3.0 innings in his rehab stint at Triple-A across two different appearances. He has allowed one run in that time.

The Yankees are 78-77 on the season and in fourth place in the American League East. They will take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre.

First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. ET.
