New York Yankees Likely to Place Starting Pitcher on Injured List
The New York Yankees have battled injuries all season, and now they appear likely to battle one more.
The team is likely to put starting pitcher Nestor Cortes on the injured list with a shoulder problem, according to Chris Kirschner of 'The Athletic.'
Aaron Boone said Nestor Cortes will “probably” go on the IL. Shoulder injury. May need to miss one or two starts.
The Yankees have already dealt with injuries to Luis Severino, Carlos Rodon, Lou Trivino, Tommy Kahnle, Josh Donaldson, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton this year, so this is nothing new for them, unfortunately.
Cortes is not the same pitcher this year as he was last year. The 28-year-old is 5-2 record-wise, but has labored to a 5.16 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.
Last year, he was an All-Star, going 12-4 with a 2.44 ERA.
He's been with the Yankees since 2021, having found a home after bouncing around the previous few years. He spent 2018 with the Orioles, 2019 with the Yankees and 2020 with the Mariners before rebounding in New York again.
Despite the injuries, the Yankees are still one of the best teams in baseball. They are 35-25 on the year and boast a very powerful offense, but they remain 6.5 games out of first place in the American League East.
The Yankees finish a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday at 7:10 before heading home to take on the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.
That series will begin at 7:05 p.m. ET.
