Pittsburgh Pirates Legend Out For Rest of Magical Reunion Season
The magical reunion season of Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is now over, as he was placed on the injured list Wednesday because of Achilles' tightness.
Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on social media:
Andrew McCutchen will be in a walking boot for six weeks. Season effectively done.
McCutchen starred for the Pirates from 2009-2016, winning MVP in the National League in 2013. He also made the All-Star Game five times in his tenure in Pittsburgh before leaving for stops in San Francisco, New York (Yankees), Philadelphia and Milwaukee.
He returned to Pittsburgh this year in a feel-good story that clearly won't have a happy ending.
He hit .256 this season with 12 homers, 43 RBI and 11 stolen bases. There was talk of him being traded at the trade deadline but he wanted to stay in Pittsburgh.
Lifetime, McCutchen is a .276 hitter with 299 home runs and a .369 on-base percentage. The 36-year-old outfielder is a four-time Silver Slugger winner and a Gold Glove winner. Being one home run short of the magical 300 number, it's hard to imagine him not coming back in 2024, but he'll be a free agent so the interest in his services will undoubtedly be key.
The Pirates enter play on Wednesday at 64-75 overall. They'll host the Milwaukee Brewers for a Wednesday matinee. First pitch is slated for 12:35 p.m. ET at PNC Park.
Brewers righty Freddy Peralta will pitch against Pirates righty Colin Selby. Peralta is 11-8 with a 3.85 ERA while Selby is 2-0 with a 5.79.
