Robbie Ray, 2021 Cy Young Winner, to Get Surgery and Miss Season For Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners got bad news on left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray on Wednesday, as manager Scott Servais revealed that Ray will miss the entire season.
He's been on the injured list since after his first start of the year with a left flexor tendon issue and we heard yesterday that he was hoping to start a throwing program soon, but further testing revealed that will not be happening.
He will need flexor tendon surgery to repair the issue and there is no word on if he'll be ready for spring training next year at this time.
He signed a five-year, $115 million contract before the 2022 season with the Mariners, a year after winning the Cy Young with the Toronto Blue Jays. He went 12-12 in 2022 with a 3.71 ERA and helped the Mariners make the playoffs for the first time since 2001.
For his career, he's 74-71 and has played with Seattle, Toronto, Arizona and Detroit.
As for the Mariners options, they are currently fine in terms of numbers. They've just brought Chris Flexen in the bullpen to fill the void, but he's really struggled, going 0-4 with an 8.86 ERA thus far.
The Mariners do have depth options available as Darren McCaughan, José Rodríguez and Easton McGee are on the 40-man roster. The team also has prospect options like Bryce Miller and Emerson Hancock as options down the line.
At the time of this posting, the Mariners are leading the Phillies 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
