Just when you think it can't get worse for the Seattle Mariners this year, it does.

The M's, a year after breaking the playoff drought, have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball. Entering play on Thursday at 47-48, they are in fourth place in the American League West and 10.0 games out of first. They are also 5.5 games out of the final wild card spot.

And now, they've been dealt another crucial injury has outfielder Jarred Kelenic suffered a broken foot and has landed on the injured list.

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports that Cade Marlowe will be called up from Triple-A.

While Kelenic has regressed from his hot start, he's been one of the constant presences in the lineup this season. He's hitting .252 with 11 homers, 45 RBI and 12 stolen bases. He's also played good outfield, runs the bases well and has been one of the few players to provide energy to a generally listless team.

One of the centerpieces of the organizational rebuild, he was acquired before the 2019 season from the New York Mets.

As for Marlowe, he's the organization's No. 14 prospect right now, per MLB.com.

The following comes from a portion of his MLB.com prospect profile:

After considering a career in biology, Marlowe turned his baseball trajectory around with a stellar 2021 in which he crushed 26 homers and was one of only two Minor Leaguers to drive in more than 100 runs, earning the Ken Griffey Jr. Minor League Hitter of the Year Award. He followed that up with another 23 homers in ‘22 while swiping 42 bases, tangible evidence to the front office’s assertion that he’s one of the system’s best runners.

The Mariners play the Twins on Thursday at 3:40 p.m. ET.
