Seattle Mariners Manager Scott Servais Gives Ominous Update on Injured Pitcher Bryce Miller
The Seattle Mariners have won four straight games, have gotten back to .500 and just had two additional All-Stars named to the American League team, but the news isn't all good.
Manager Scott Servais provided a grim outlook on young starting pitcher Bryce Miller, who was recently placed on the injured list with a finger/blister issue.
The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:
Miller, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand, is "not going to pitch for a while" according to manager Scott Servais, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Servais added Miller will be limited to playing light catch for the time being. The overarching question for fantasy managers is naturally how the "for a while" portion of the Mariners' skipper's comment will be quantified, considering the upcoming All-Star break qualifies as a fairly extended layoff in and of itself. It appears likely the next week to 10 days will be integral to how quickly Miller can heal up from an injury that affects his velocity significantly, and if that downtime doesn't prove sufficient to return him to full health, there's a chance the rookie misses additional time once play resumes.
While the above post is correct that "for a while" is a rather nebulous timeline, it's still a nervewracking development for a Mariners team that is currently 5.0 games out of a wild card spot.
The team has dealt with injuries to Robbie Ray and Marco Gonzales this year and Miller has been a lifeline for them. They can't really afford to lose him for an extended time, especially since youngster Bryan Woo is going to be shut down in the second half sometime.
Miller is 5-3 with a 3.97 ERA.
The Mariners take on the Giants on Wednesday at 9:05 p.m. ET.
