The Seattle Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins on Thursday afternoon, 5-0, but the real drama came before the game even started.

Speaking with reporters before the game, Mariners outfielder Jarred Kelenic got extremely emotional when discussing his broken foot.

Kelenic broke the foot on Wednesday night when he kicked a water cooler in frustration. You can read more on that here.

The comments were posted on Twitter by Ryan Divish of 'The Seattle Times.'

"I let the emotions get the best of me there. I feel terrible, especially for the guys. I let the emotions get the best of me and I let them down, and I take full responsibility for it. It's on me and it can't happen."

Kelenic was upset that he struck out in a critical spot in the ninth inning on Friday. With the Mariners trailing by three, he was the tying run against Twins closer Jhoan Duran but struck out after a nine-pitch battle.

It's a tough blow for Kelenic, who was enjoying his first season any success at the big league level, and it's a devastating blow for the Mariners, who just lost one of the only pieces bringing them any kind of offense this season.

While there's no timetable on his return, this injury is likely to going to cost him several weeks, and for a team that is 48-48 and languishing in the playoff picture, those are several weeks they don't have.

While Kelenic has regressed from his hot start, he's been one of the constant presences in the lineup this season. He's hitting .252 with 11 homers, 45 RBI and 12 stolen bases. He's also played good outfield, runs the bases well and has been one of the few players to provide energy to a generally listless team.

One of the centerpieces of the organizational rebuild, he was acquired before the 2019 season from the New York Mets.

The Mariners play the Blue Jays on Friday at 10:10 p.m. ET.
