The Seattle Mariners got some good news on the previously-unknown injury front on Monday, as projected starting third baseman Luis Urias was cleared to begin throwing after shoulder issues.

Per Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports:

From the Mariners dings and dents department, Luis Urias who came in a couple of weeks ago for early work had some shoulder inflammation and was shut down from throwing. Tests were good and he was able to resume work with Perry Hill yesterday.

The 26-year-old Urias was acquired this offseason from the Boston Red Sox in a deal for reliever Isaiah Campbell. He's coming off a dreadful year in 2023 as he hit just .194 and battled injuries with the Milwaukee Brewers and Red Sox.

However, he was a useful player prior, smacking 23 homers in 2021 and hitting another 16 in 2022. The Mariners will be counting on him this season and he looks to form 1/2 of a platoon at third base with Josh Rojas. He can also play second base if the team needs.

The Mariners finished 88-74 last season and missed the playoffs by 1.0 game. They have had an active offseason, acquiring Urias, Jorge Polanco, Mitch Haniger, Carlos Vargas and Luke Raley in trades, all despite a relatively cash-strapped budget.

The M's last made the playoffs in 2022 and are the only team in baseball to have never appeared in a World Series. They open up the season on March 28 at T-Mobile Park against the Red Sox, who are projected to finish last in the American League East.
