Seattle Mariners Reinstate Two Key Players From Injured List on Tuesday
The Seattle Mariners have made a flurry of roster moves ahead of Tuesday's series-opening game with the San Diego Padres.
Per the team's PR department on Twitter:
.@Mariners roster moves:
Andrés Muñoz, RHP, reinstated from 15-day Injured List
Dylan Moore, INF/OF, reinstated from 10-day Injured List
Trevor Gott, RHP, placed on 15-day Injured List (retroactive to June 5)
Sam Haggerty, INF/OF, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma
Both the Munoz and Moore activations are big for a Mariners team that is certainly reeling right now. After making the playoffs last season, the M's were a preseason darling this season, but have limped to a 29-30 record and just got bludgeoned by the Texas Rangers in a three-game sweep.
By activating Munoz, the team's bullpen will get better and will allow manager Scott Servais to play matchups more often at the back end of games. The team had used Paul Sewald almost exclusively as a closer this year, and now can be more flexible with his usage.
Munoz' burst onto the scene last year, pitching in 64 games and registering a 2.49 ERA. He struck out 96 batters in just 65 innings as the Mariners went to the playoffs for the first time since 2001.
As for Moore, he's been out all season with oblique and core issues. Given the struggles of Kolten Wong, he figures to see significant time at second base, but can also play each outfield position and the rest of the infield if needed.
He is a career .225 hitter against LHPs. That may not seem like much, but he's a career .198 hitter against righties, so that is a significant difference.
The 30-year-old signed a three-year contract worth $8.875 million this offseason.
As for Gott, he's been a nice find for the Mariners this season. He's 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 28 games but has struck out 31 batters in 26.2 innings.
The Mariners play the Padres on Tuesday at 9:40 p.m. ET.
