Texas Rangers Get Positive Injury Update on Key Backstop
The Texas Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night 9-2 to complete a four-game sweep North of the Border.
The win propelled the Rangers to 82-64 on the season and put them just 0.5 games back in the American League West race. They also lead the battle for the second wild card spot by 1.0 game and have won six straight ballgames.
Unfortunately, the news wasn't all positive Thursday as the Rangers lost starting catcher Mitch Garver to a foot injury. After the game though, the report seemed to be positive.
Per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News:
X-rays on Garver's foot showed no fracture. Listed as a left forefoot contusion
While Garver could need a day or two to get right, the fact that Grant didn't mention the injured list immediately is a good thing. Garver is a valuable part of the Rangers' lineup, pairing with Jonah Heim to make one of the best catching duos in the league.
He started at designated hitter on Thursday and is now hitting .280 this season with 17 homers and 45 RBI. The 32-year-old is in his seventh year in the big leagues. He's been with the Twins for five years and the Rangers for two. A career .254 hitter, he's popped 80 home runs over those seven years.
The Rangers will be back in action on Friday night when they take on the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field.
First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET as Jon Gray (TEX) goes up against Lucas Giolito (CLE).
