Toronto Blue Jays Pitchers Kevin Gausman, Alek Manoah Facing Shoulder Injuries
The Toronto Blue Jays' starting rotation is facing quite a few injury concerns with Spring Training in full swing.
Right-hander Kevin Gausman was scheduled to throw a live bullpen session Monday, but MLB.com's Keegan Matheson reported that the veteran will not be participating as planned.
Gausman is dealing with "general shoulder fatigue," per manager John Schneider, following his most recent bullpen session. While an MRI did not show any injuries or structural concerns, Gausman is still resting for the time being.
The 33-year-old ranks third in all of baseball with 95 starts over the last three seasons, and he has made 30-plus appearances in each of the last seven non-COVID campaigns. Gausman has placed top-10 in Cy Young voting three years in a row, making two All-Star Games in that time, so the Blue Jays are surely crossing their fingers he doesn't miss any serious time.
Gausman isn't the only banged up arm on Toronto's staff, though.
Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling relayed that Alek Manoah is set to play catch on Monday. The righty struggled in his first Cactus League appearance last week, then suffered from some shoulder soreness a few days later.
While there was not any structural damage found as of Saturday, the team will formulate its plan with Manoah depending on how he feels after playing catch.
Zwelling also added that Yariel Rodriguez, who is dealing with back issues, threw a side session on Sunday and is scheduled to throw live batting practice on Friday.
The Blue Jays signed the 26-year-old Cuban hurler this offseason, rounding out one of the deepest and most decorated rotations in the entire American League. With nearly half of that group banged up, however, Toronto might need to play it safe with the group with Opening Day less than a month out.
