Baltimore Orioles Minor League Affiliate Turns Triple Play on Tuesday
Amazing things aren't just happening for the Baltimore Orioles at the major league level, they are happening at the minor league level too.
On Tuesday the night, the Delmarva Shorebirds, one of the O's affiliates got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam by turning a rare triple play.
You can see the play here as it begins with the batter lacing a line drive to second base. He flips to second to double off the runner there and then the throw goes back to first to get the runner there.
The Shorebirds are the Single-A affiliate of the Orioles. They are the team that No. 1 overall prospect Jackson Holliday started with this year before being promoted to High-A and then Double-A.
The shortstop Young is inside the top-30 of Orioles prospect rankings, per MLB.com. He checks in at No. 28 and was drafted in the 17th round in 2022.
A little bit on him from his MLB.com prospect profile:
He hit 16 homers in his first full season at Vanderbilt but also led NCAA Division I in strikeouts while battling a left shoulder injury that required offseason surgery. Healthy again, his offensive struggles persisted last spring as Young continued to sell out for power and pile up whiffs, batting .207/.327/.383 as a junior. The Orioles took a no-risk flier on him in the 17th round in the 2022 Draft, signing him for just over $1.3 million when it became clear they weren’t going to be able to come to terms with third-round pick Nolan McLean. Young got his feet wet but didn’t hit much during a brief debut in pro ball, finishing the year at Single-A Delmarva.
Young is a different player than he was in his prep days, having added 20 pounds and a more upward angle to his swing from both sides of the plate.
At the major league level, the Orioles trail the Dodgers, 5-1, at the time of this posting.
