Boston Red Sox Prospect Placed on Restricted List, Sent Home From Arizona Fall League

Boston Red Sox prospect Brainer Bonaci has been sent home from the Arizona Fall League and placed on the restricted list for violating the joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.

Boston Red Sox prospect Brainer Bonaci has been sent home from the Arizona Fall League and has been placed on the restricted list for violating the joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.

Per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe:

No further information was available about the nature of the violation or how long Bonaci will remain on the restricted list.

Bonaci, a 21-year-old infielder, hit .297/.354/.464 with 11 homers in 79 games between High A Greenville and Double A Portland in 2023...

However, Bonaci’s season came to an abrupt end when he was placed on the reserve list in late August and eventually sent home to Venezuela due to what one league source at the time called administrative leave.

Bonaci was taken off the reserve list at the end of the minor league season and permitted to take part in the Red Sox’ fall performance program in Fort Myers while also being cleared to play in the Arizona Fall League, where he was on the roster of the Glendale Desert Dogs.

Bonaci is currently ranked the No. 11 prospect in the organization, per MLB.com. The following comes from a portion of his MLB.com prospect profile:

Though Bonaci has slowed as he has gotten stronger and is now a fringy-to-average runner, he remains one of the best infield defenders and has one of the strongest arms in the system. His instincts and quick first step still give him solid range to both sides at shortstop, though he played more second base last season as a teammate of 2021 No. 4 overall pick Marcelo Mayer. He also saw action at third and even played an inning in right field.

A switch-hitter, Bonaci has been a different hitter in 2023 after being too passive and making too much soft contact in the past. Stronger and more aggressive than ever, he's turning on more pitches, hitting the ball with more authority and showing 15-homer potential.
