Chicago White Sox DFA Former First-Round Draft Choice and Top Prospect

To make room for new infielder Paul DeJong, the Chicago White Sox have designated former top prospect Adam Haseley for assignment.

The Chicago White Sox officially announced the signing of infielder Paul DeJong on Monday night. He is expected to be the team's Opening Day shortstop in 2024.

With that move though came another roster transaction, as the Sox announced they had designated outfielder Adam Haseley for assignment.

Per the team:

The #WhiteSox have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.75-million contract with infielder Paul DeJong, and designated outfielder Adam Haseley for assignment.

The 27-year-old is a former top prospect and the No. 8 selection (Phillies) in the 2017 draft. Though he's appeared in parts of five big league seasons with the Phillies and White Sox, he's slumped, hitting just .259 with five homers and 43 RBI.

He's been average in the minor leagues as well. Lifetime, he's a .269 hitter at those levels. This past year, playing for Triple-A Charlotte, he hit .264 with six homers and 24 RBI in 72 games. He hit 15 homers for Charlotte in the 2022 season.

Given his age and prospect pedigree, he should get another chance on a minor league deal, but it's starting to feel like Haseley is running out of time to have an impactful major league career.

He reached as high as No. 6 on the Phillies' prospect charts in 2018. Here is what MLB.com had about him then:

The Phillies nabbed him at No. 8 and gave him $5.1 million to sign, an above-pick value deal.

Haseley uses the entire field and while he often featured more of an inside-out swing from the left side, he did start to show more power during his junior season. While not a burner, Haseley does have above-average speed. He is capable of playing center field, but whether that's his long-term home remains to be seen. He is capable of playing all three outfield spots, with at least an average arm.
