Detroit Tigers Make Multiple Roster Moves, Including Nabbing Former Seattle Mariners Hurler
With spring training less than one month away, the Detroit Tigers made multiple roster moves on Thursday afternoon.
Per the team on social media:
The Tigers have announced the following roster moves:
*Claimed RHP Devin Sweet off waivers from San Francisco
*Designated INF Tyler Nevin for assignment
Nevin is a 26-year-old infielder who has spent parts of three years in the big leagues with the Baltimore Orioles and Tigers. He played in 41 games for Detroit in 2023, hitting .200 with two home runs and 10 RBI.
A former first-round pick of the Colorado Rockies (2015), he will have seven days to be traded, released or sent to the minor leagues.
As for Sweet, he made his major league debut for the Seattle Mariners in 2023 and also pitched for the Oakland Athletics. He went 1-0 with a 10.38 ERA in seven games but fared better at the minor league level.
Not overwhelming with his velocity, he features a solid changeup that should give him a chance to stick in Detroit's bullpen.
Though the Tigers do have opportunity in the bullpen, they aren't going to just give innings away to people. Detroit finished second in the American League Central last season and appears ready to finally take the next step in coming out of their rebuild.
They finally anticipate having a healthy rotation with Casey Mize, Matt Manning and Tarik Skubal being a part of it. In addition, they also signed veterans Jack Flaherty and Kenta Maeda and traded for utility player Mark Canha.
