New York Yankees Owner Says Anthony Volpe Won't Be Sent to Minors
New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner says that rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe won't be getting sent down to the minor leagues, even amid his recent offensive struggles.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com has more:
Hal Steinbrenner said Anthony Volpe is the Yankees’ SS. There have been no discussions about sending him down. Hal told Volpe at the end of spring training that this would not be a three-week audition.
The 22-year-old rookie was the Yankees top prospect entering the season and beat out Isiah Kiner-Falefa in spring training for the job.
He's got a good combination of speed and power as evidenced by his nine home runs and 14 stolen bases this season, but his .186 average and .260 on-base percentage leave something to be desired.
A first-round pick out of the New Jersey high school ranks in 2019, Volpe has seen his average drop each month. He hit .217 in March/April before hitting .174 in May and just .120 thus far in June.
Perhaps the Yankees won't demote Volpe in favor of anyone else currently in the organization, but you have to wonder if they will make a trade upgrade in advance of the trade deadline.
While the Yankees want to develop Volpe and see him as a huge part of the future, they also can't afford to punt offense in the midst of a playoff race. The Yankees enter play on Tuesday at 38-29 and in third place in the American League East. They've lost six of their last 10 games.
They'll play the New York Mets on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET.
