Pittsburgh Pirates Agree to Minor League Deal with Former New York Yankees' Pitcher Who Threw a Perfect Game
The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to stockpile veteran players this offseason, coming to terms with former New York Yankees' pitcher Domingo German on a minor league deal.
Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on social media:
Pirates have agreed with Domingo German on a $1.5 million contract. Minors deal.
The Pirates, who faded fast last year once June hit, have set a goal to be competitive all throughout the season in 2024. In order to do that, they've brought in veterans Marco Gonzales, Martin Perez, Aroldis Chapman, Rowdy Tellez, Eric Lauer, and Yasmani Grandal. They also brought back Andrew McCutchen for another year.
By nature of when he signed, German likely won't be ready for the start of the season. He probably wouldn't be an option for the Pirates until at least a few weeks into the season, if he's ever an option at all.
The 31-year-old German has had quite the career arc. The native of the Dominican Republic spent six years with the New York Yankees, going 31-28 with a 4.41 ERA. He won 18 games back in 2019 and led the majors in win percentage (.818), but then was suspended at the end of that season and for all of the COVID-shortened 2020 season for violation of the league's domestic violence policy.
The Yankees brought him back in 2021 and he appeared in 57 games over the last three years for New York, tossing a perfect game for the Yankees during the 2023 season.
German has made 89 starts in his big league career out of 112 appearances.
