Pittsburgh Pirates Re-Calling Top Prospect in Season's Final Week
As the Major League Baseball season enters its final week, the Pittsburgh Pirates are giving top prospect Nick Gonzales another chance, re-calling him from Triple-A.
Per Pirates' reporter Jason Mackey:
Source: Pirates are recalling Nick Gonzales for the Phillies series.
Gonzales is the No. 6 overall prospect in the organization. He made his debut this year already but only hit .216 in 102 at-bats. The 24-year-old was drafted No. 7 overall in the shortened 2020 draft (Coronavirus).
The following comes from his MLB.com prospect profile:
Gonzales still shows off the plus bat speed and fast hands that made him such an alluring Draft prospect, with an ability to be very quick to the ball. He relies on rhythm and timing at the plate, and he’s struggled to get in sync at times -- missing reps hasn’t helped in that department. There is plenty of raw power to tap into and he’s willing to draw walks, but he’s swung and missed much more than someone who looked like such a tremendous pure hitter, with close to a 28 percent strikeout rate.
Known as a bat-first infielder as he entered pro ball, that’s still the case, but he’s worked hard on his defense to improve his footwork and reads.
The Pirates are currently 74-82 and in fourth place in the National League Central. They've won six of their last 10 games and will open up a series with the Phillies on Tuesday night.
First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park.
