Milwaukee Brewers Now Not Expected to Trade Former Cy Young Winner
After weeks of speculation, the Milwaukee Brewers are not expected to trade former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes this offseason.
This came from a report from MLB Insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today:
– The Milwaukee Brewers are now expected to retain Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes instead of trading him, still wanting to compete for the NL Central title.
The Brewers won the NL Central a season ago but were bounced in the wild card round of the playoffs by the Arizona Diamondbacks. As Nightengale says, they want to try to win again, which makes sense. They still have plenty of talent including Burnes, Willy Adames and 19-year-old phenom Jackson Chourio, who is expected to make his major league debut early next season.
Also, the Brewers likely could have traded Burnes and counted on ace Brandon Woodruff to shoulder the rotation load, but Woodruff suffered a shoulder injury that is likely to keep him out the entire season. He was then non-tendered as a result, making Burnes's presence necessary.
Furthermore, if the Brewers wanted to trade Burnes, they likely could do it at the trade deadline and still see a good return.
He's coming off a year which saw him go 10-8 with a 3.39 ERA. Lifetime, he's a three-time All-Star who won the Cy Young Award in 2021. He is 45-27 for his career with a 3.26 ERA.
Alongside Burnes, the Brewers will utilize veteran Wade Miley in the starting rotation. They also have Collin Rea and Freddy Peralta as well. Aaron Ashby is an option when healthy as well.
