The National Baseball Hall of Fame unveiled the ballot for its prospective 2024 class on Monday, featuring 12 new members and 14 returning contenders.
José Bautista, Adrián Beltré, Bartolo Colon, Adrián González, Matt Holliday, Victor Martinez, Joe Mauer, Brandon Phillips, José Reyes, James Shields, Chase Utley and David Wright are the new faces on the ballot.
Beltré is the most likely to make it to Cooperstown, given he finished his career with 3,156 hits, 477 home runs and a 93.5 WAR as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers. Mauer – a Minnesota Twins lifer – and Utley – a World Series champion with the Philadelphia Phillies – could also make it into the hall, although it remains to be seen if they can do so in their first year on the ballot.
The pair of former New York Mets infielders, Reyes and Wright, looked poised to get inducted early on in their careers, but their lack of production in their 30s could lead to a lack of votes.
As for the returnees, longtime Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton is entering his sixth year on the ballot after earning 72.2% of the vote in 2023. Seven-time All-Star closer Billy Wagner garnered votes on 68.1% of the ballots last time around, and he is heading into his second-to-last year of eligibility.
Outfielders Andruw Jones and Gary Sheffield – who is in his final year on the ballot – are among the other players who are within shouting distance of getting inducted.
Álex Rodríguez and Manny Ramirez are some of the final holdovers from the steroid era, with the two all-time sluggers failing to exceed 40% last year.
The results of the Baseball Writers' Association of America's voting will be announced Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. on MLB Network. Should anyone break the 75% threshold required to be inducted, the ceremony will take place in Cooperstown on July 21.
