Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen was on the wrong side of history with a rare clunker of a start.

Against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gallen lasted just 3.2 innings on the mound. He surrendered eight hits and five earned runs while also tacking on four walks vs. just two strikeouts.

The Twitter account @OptaSTATS put out the historical nugget:

Tonight marked the first time in his career Zac Gallen of the @Dbacks had more walks than strikeouts in an outing. His streak of 90 consecutive appearances without having more walks than strikeouts was the longest streak by any MLB pitcher to begin his career in the modern era.

That's an incredible run that Gallen was on. Ninety straight starts? Not even a one inning disaster where you had one walk and no k's? Nope. Never happened.

Even despite the subpar start, Gallen is still having an excellent year for the surprising D'Backs. He's now 6-2 on the season with a 2.95 ERA. He's struck out 72 batters in 61 innings and has a WHIP of an even 1.00.

For his career, Gallen is 28-23 in 91 starts. He has a lifetime ERA of 3.07.

The Diamondbacks lost to the Pirates, 13-3, to fall to 25-20 on the season. At the time of this posting, they are 3.0 games back of the Dodgers. The Pirates moved to 24-20 with the win and currently tied with the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.

The two teams will play again Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
