Baltimore Orioles' Legend Signs One-Day Contract to Officially Retire as Member of Organization
As the Baltimore Orioles chase the playoffs in the now, and continue building for the future, they honored their past on Friday night.
The O's hosted the retirement ceremony of former outfielder Adam Jones, who spent 11 years with the organization.
He signed a one-day contract to officially retire as a member of the Black and Orange.
You can see the entirety of his retirement press conference below:
“My final time putting on a jersey will be here, and I’m just forever grateful for what Baltimore has taught me,” the 38-year-old Jones said. “I’m just glad that I’ll always be welcome in this city. The people here really appreciated the way I carried myself, played the game and gave back.”
Jones was acquired in 2008 via a massive trade with the Seattle Mariners and proceeded to be one of the best Orioles in team history.
Over his 11 years, he made five All-Star teams and won four Gold Glove awards. He was a lifetime .277 hitter who hit 282 home runs. He also drove in 945 career runs.
Several of Jones's former teammates took in the festivities in person, including Nick Markakis, who caught the ceremonial first pitch from Jones.
Others sent recorded video messages which can be seen below. Included were Trey Mancini, Cedric Mullins, Ryan Flaherty and others. Even former Yankees star CC Sabathia popped in.
Unfortunately for Jones and the Orioles, the night didn't culminate in a "W" as the O's were beaten by the Tampa Bay Rays. The two are now tied in the American League East race.
