Baltimore Orioles Outfielder at Bottom of Order For American League All-Stars
After being inserted into the starting lineup because of injury, Baltimore Orioles outfielder Austin Hays is hitting seventh in the order for the American League All-Star team.
The team, which is managed by Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, was unable to start Yordan Alvarez, Mike Trout or Aaron Judge because of injury, but is still very strong.
Here's the full lineup:
Semien 2B
Ohtani DH
Arozarena LF
Seager SS
Díaz 1B
García RF
Hays CF
Jung 3B
Heim C
Cole P
So Hays is sandwiched in the order around most of the Texas Rangers selections. It's the first All-Star selection for the 28-year-old out of Jacksonville University. He was a third-round pick of the Orioles back in the 2016 draft and is hitting .314 this season with nine home runs and 36 RBI.
He's in his sixth year in the big leagues, all with Baltimore, so it's a nice continued sign of development for him to make the team - and start. His .314 average is seventh in all of baseball and is fourth in the American League behind only Yandy Diaz (.323), Bo Bichette (.317), and Masataka Yoshida (.316).
He's also been one of the centerpieces of the Orioles continued resurgence this year. One of the bottom feeders in baseball for years, the O's are pushing for a playoff spot this year. They are currently 54-35 and only 2.0 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.
They've also won five straight heading into the break.
The All-Star Game is Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. ET at T-Mobile Park. It's the first All-Star Game in Seattle since 2001.
