Boston Red Sox Insider Details if Team Could Trade Alex Verdugo This Offseason
The Boston Red Sox elected to keep outfielder Alex Verdugo at the trade deadline, but could they revisit a potential trade of him in the offseason?
The 27-year-old will be heading into the final year of his deal next year and will undoubtedly be looking for a new contract.
When you consider that Andrew Bentintendi signed for 5-years and $75 million this past offseason and the unknown commodity of Masataka Yoshida signed for 5-years and $90 million, it stands to reason that Verdugo would command as much or more on the market.
Would the Red Sox sign him to such a deal? Would they let him play out the last year of his deal and then decide? Or would they trade him as part of a way to recoup value in his walk year?
Tom Caron, Red Sox Insider at NESN, was asked if he could see the Sox trading Verdugo in the offseason as part of Friday's "Brady Farkas Show."
You can hear the full comments by clicking on the player below but here's a portion of his comments:
"I really could because now it's do it or get off the pot time for the Red Sox. If you're going to keep him, this winter, you've got to sign him to an extension... you've got to decide if we're investing $100 million plus in this guy..."
Verdugo is hitting .272 this season with eight home runs and 41 RBI. He's got a .346 on-base percentage.
The Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. First pitch at Fenway is 7:10 p.m. ET.
