Boston Red Sox' Kenley Jansen on Wrong Side of Own Personal History in Loss to San Francisco Giants

It was history of the wrong kind on Saturday for Boston Red Sox reliever Kenley Jansen.

The Boston Red Sox lost to the San Francisco Giants 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Giants got the win thanks to a walk-off home run from slugger J.D. Davis off of Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen.

Jansen, who has been solid in his first year in Boston, did something that he's never done before in defeat.

Per Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe:

That was the first time in his career Kenley Jansen faced one hitter and allowed a home run. It also was the first time he threw one pitch in an outing. His previous low was 2.

It was a tough outing for Jansen, obviously, and a tough loss for the Red Sox. Boston was down all game but rallied for two runs in the ninth to tie the game, only to have that happen.

After the loss, Jansen is now 2-5 on the season while sporting a 3.15 ERA. He's got 23 saves and three blown saves, although Saturday isn't a blown save.

He's had an illustrious career that borders on being Hall of Fame worthy. He's in his 14th year in the big leagues with the Dodgers, Braves and Red Sox. He has 414 career saves and hit the 400-save milestone earlier this season.

After the loss, the Red Sox are 56-48 and in fourth place in the American League East. They are also 2.5 back of the third and final wild card spot.

The Red Sox and Giants will play again on Sunday afternoon.

First pitch is 4:10 p.m. ET.
